Why exactly do people feel the need to speculate about further details? Why do they insist on reading more into the word "torment" than Tolkien almost certainly intended? You can't make the text answer a question the author never intended to answer. So any "answer" that you might come up with is pure fiction. Why bother? Why not just take Tolkien's words at face value? Originally Posted by Reddhawk. Ever heard of Reader-response Theory? It might be worth looking into, since I know you're interested in writing.

The basic idea is that the reader's response to and interpretation of a text is just as, if not more, important than the text itself. Well, I guess that's something I just don't subscribe to. I rather think it's a bit presumptuous on the part of the reader.

Aug 07 , PM Well, there's some merit to it since no two people are going to interpret everything exactly the same.

Our beliefs, culture, and life experiences all colour the way we interpret things. In that same vein, one could say that it's a bit presumptuous on the part of the writer to assume that everyone will interpret and understand their words in the manner they intended. That being said, I tend to agree more with you and err on the side of the writer. Still, as a hopeful writer, it's nice to be aware of these things and to realize that not everyone is going to take your word for it.

It's like Plato's allegory of the cave. We can choose to be bound and blinded never seeing the real 'light' of the truth of the text, but we should strive to break those bounds and apply our knowledge and reasonable background of the author to determine his intent.

HIS intent is the key phrase there. Everything else is just figments of our imagination. This is based on other more clear statements he makes elsewhere, and based on his overall approach to the topic as it applies to elves. Aug 08 , AM I find a view like that difficult to understand.

I mean, if you can accept that authors intend all kinds of things and fail more often than not, is it so difficult to see that they can also succeed at revealing things they never intended in the first place? AFAIC authorial intent is just one important part of literary analysis, along with reader response, biography, psychology, history, and the textual structure itself. We look forward to meeting you.
