Building of The Old Cathedral began in and is architecturally very plain alongside the flamboyant and much larger new version. Most of the cloister was destroyed during the Lisbon eartquake of but is still worth a visit to see its Gothic tombs and ancient organ.
It was the home of a university professor who was a member of the Order of Santiago. He decorated the building with scallop shells the symbol of Santiago as a monument to Santiago de Compostela. Salamanca exceeded my expectations. Absolutely fabulous. Typical Spanish. So much to do and see but not too big. We were visiting my son on erasmus and he loves it there. A great buzz, always something to do. We loved it. Full of museums, art galleries, beautiful cathedrals with roof top views of the city, tapas, coffee shops and more. Fantastic architecture, lots of bars,restaurants, places to see. Cathedral stunning. Motor museum has lots of vintage cars in excellent condition. Overall a good vibe.
We discovered Salamanca a few years ago. It is a stunning beautiful city that remains off the list for UK tourists - for unknown reasons. The architecture, the restautants and bars and the Plaza Mayor must be one of the best sights in the world. Every bit as nice as Edinburgh but without the drunken youth We will be back for a longer stay. After the noise, crowds, and hoards of tourists in overrated Barcelona, driving to the southern and then northern cities of Spain was a dream come true for my husband and I.
Even though we had been to Spain before, we decided to visit the cities not so well known to tourists. We bypassed Valencia, Madrid, Marbella etc. Salamanca was an unexpected treasure. This city brings to mind all of the charm and beauty of what we imagined the "real" Spain should be. Breathtaking architecture and history, lovely shops and cafes, nice people, you can almost hear the Concierto de Aranguez playing in your head as you walk through the enchanting romantic streets.
Granada and Zaragoza are also worth a stay and you shouldn't miss the Monastery of La Piedra in Zaragoza, waterfalls, ancient monastery of wine making monks, lots of vineyards, what could be better??? Salamanca is a beautiful, historical and very graphic city, I really fell in love with it! Rather than that, im glad I had planned a short stay 2 nights to see the town and catch up with local friends, as there are not many things to do and see.
The thing I absolutely loved about this hotel is that they were so welcoming to my dog. They provided a bed and dishes for food and water. Additionally, everything else was just great..
The women who worked in the breakfast room was super nice. In short, this is a fabulous place to stay and I highly recommend it to anyone, with or without a pet. Nothing not to like about this hotel. The Staff has clearly thought through what a customer would want in an excellent stay and is executing that plan starting with a detailed reception. What a beautiful hotel. Easy to walk to and explore. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was okay not great. The breakfast a la card was very good. Absolutely a treasure in this beautiful old town. We've seen all Salamanca's most beautiful monuments, and now we can spend a little time shopping for souvenirs to remind us of our visit. The best idea when shopping for gifts is to head for the streets of Toro and Zamora, where you'll find numerous boutiques, jewellers, typical crafts shops Ask for filigree work or the typical Salamanca button.
